A massive fire broke out overnight at the Patrick Cudahy meat processing plant in southern Wisconsin, and officials have evacuated homes in a 1-mile radius.
Milwaukee CBS affiliate WDJT-TV reported Monday morning that the fire broke out just after 10 p.m. Sunday at the Patrick Cudahy Plant in the Milwaukee suburb of Cudahy.
The fire was still blazing Monday morning.
At first, firefighters just advised residents to keep their windows closed and their air conditioning off because of the smoke, but later, they ordered evacuations for a mile radius, WDJT-TV reported.
Residents were asked to evacuate to General Mitchell School, at 5950 S. Illinois Ave. in Cudahy. They may bring their pets.
As many as 100 firefighters worked through the night and remained on the scene Monday morning.
An extra-alarm fire also hit the plant exactly three years before the current one, on July 5, 2006,
the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.
Cudahy Fire Chief Dan Mayer said the blaze was difficult to fight because it was in a confined space.
Mayer says there was heavy fire, water and smoke damage to the plant, parts of which are more than 100 years old.
