Officials of the Chicago Transit Authority say the agency is speeding up delivery of hybrid-powered buses in an effort to combat rising fuel costs.
CTA President Ron Huberman says the move comes as part of an effort to stay within the agency's $66 million fuel budget for 2008 despite near-record gasoline prices.
Huberman says reducing the weight of chassis and engines on new buses by about 1,000 pounds will help improve mileage.
He says the CTA hopes to save more than $91 million over the life of its buses compared with the costs to operate the current fleet of about 2,100 buses.
Huberman said Wednesday that despite the increased gasoline costs, no service cuts or fare increases are being planned for this year. He did not rule out fare increases in 2009, however.
