CTA Fare Hike May Be Coming After All
Huberman Says Fuel Costs, Free Rides For Seniors May Force Fare Increase
CHICAGO (AP) ―
Despite recently increased state aid, the president of the Chicago Transit Authority says soaring fuel prices and free rides for senior citizens might force the CTA to break its promise to hold off on a fare hike this year.
CTA head Ron Huberman says that in addition to the recent spike in gasoline and diesel fuel prices, bids for electricity on the elevated rail system came back 25 percent higher than what the CTA currently pays.
In January, when the legislature approved a sales tax increase in the Chicago area to aid the CTA, Huberman canceled threatened service cuts and fare increases.
But Huberman says now that the agency also didn't fully realize what the impact of free rides for seniors was going to be.
