CTA Bus Driver Cited Following South Side Crash

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 67-year-old woman has been ticketed for crashing a CTA bus into a vacant building Friday afternoon on the South Side. Twelve people were injured.

The northbound X9 Ashland bus struck a building near the intersection West 75th Street and South Ashland Avenue about 3:50 p.m., CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski said. The bus crashed into the Chicago Fire Brick Company, 7531 S. Ashland Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

"According to sources on the scene, the bus crashed into an abandoned building," Hosinski said.

Tracey Walker, of the 7400 block of South Wood Street, was cited with damage to property, police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said.

"The bus did not go into the building, but rammed up against it," Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said. "The bus knocked into a railing and stopped before crashing into the building."

Twelve people were taken to area hospitals. Two people were taken in "stable" condition, and one person was taken in good condition to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, Fire Media Affairs Assistant Director Eve Rodriguez said.

One person was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and one person was taken in "stable" condition to Holy Cross Hospital, according to Rodriguez.

Two people were taken in "stable" condition to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. Three people were taken in "stable" condition, and two people were taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, Rodriguez said.

All the victims were adults, Rodriguez said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation Saturday afternoon.

"We're investigating how the bus operator lost control of the bus," Hosinski said.
