Several CTA bus passengers are hospitalized after a teenage boy slammed a stolen car into the bus in the South Side's West Chatham neighborhood.
Police saw a stolen car rolling down the street late Sunday night at 8300 S. Holland Rd., and began to follow it. A 17-year-old boy was driving the car, a 1995 Mercedes S420 sedan, police said.
As more police cars gave chase, the driver apparently realized police were following him and gunned the gas, blowing a stop sign at 79th Street. The car plowed into a CTA bus that was headed east on 79th Street at Perry Avenue at 11:51 p.m., police said. The bus had the right of way.
The Mercedes struck the bus in the very rear right side and the wreck left the boy trapped inside. A male juvenile passenger was not injured but the 17-year-old driver was listed in critical, but stable, condition at Stroger Hospital of Cook County after firefighters extricated him from the car.
The bus driver and a reported eight other passengers were also taken to area hospitals, including Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, Holy Cross Hospital, Saint Bernard Hospital of Health Care Center and Provident Hospital of Cook County. Their injuries are not life-threatening.
The passenger was taken into custody, but had not been charged with anything as of early Monday morning. The driver remained hospitalized, but was expected to survive.
Police said the Mercedes was stolen June 22 at an unidentified location and declined to disclose who is registered to.
