One Company Bucks Trend, Hires Work Force

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The number of people looking for jobless benefits has soared to a 16-year high. More than 1 million people will lose their unemployment insurance by the end of the year.

Here in Chicago there is new hope, if you're looking for a job. A new company is hiring, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.

It's a chance to be interviewed by a wireless company called Cricket. Scores have turned out for the company's jobs fair, from the longtime unemployed to those preparing to join the club.

"I worked for a company that just filed bankruptcy," job-seeker Baba Padmanabha. "In 10 days to two more weeks I'll be unemployed."

So, like everyone else at the job fair, the young father hoped to get hired. He was encouraged because the company is looking to hire 350 people to work in its new stores. Even in a down economy, Cricket is expanding because it offers low-cost phone service.

"We're looking for retail sales managers, assistant sales managers, marketing coordinators, field technicians," Cricket general manager Dan Fowler said.

Most of the positions don't require a college degree.

"We're looking for real high-energy people with professionalism," Fowler said.

Charlene Armstrong successfully passed two of the interviews and is headed to a third. She says be prepared to answer lots of questions.

Cricket managers say if there's one mistake people make at the fair it's not providing enough information. They want to know everything, even about retail experience you may have had as a college student.

Cricket is still looking for people. You can apply online, but it's better to go the company's fair. You'll find the dates, the times and the location at the company's website here.
