Hit-And-Run Driver Cited; Crash Killed Elderly Man
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Police have located and ticketed a Chicago woman for an early Sunday hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of an elderly man in front of his South Side home.
Veronica Rangel, 33, of the 5200 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, was cited for disregarding a traffic control light, failure to report an accident, failure to reduce speed, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without insurance, police News Affairs said.
Marcos Rocha, 71, of 5748 S. California Ave., was struck by a vehicle outside his house and was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 2:39 a.m. A Sunday autopsy determined Rocha died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a pedestrian and the death was ruled an accident, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Police said Rangel was driving a white 2002 Ford pick-up south on California when Rocha entered the street from between two parked cars and was struck by the Ford about 2 a.m. After being hit, Rocha landed on the hood of the truck, which fled, police said.
Rangel fled the scene and was arrested about 1 ½ hours later at her home, police said. Felony charges were rejected and she was released after receiving traffic citations, police said.
Rangel is scheduled to appear in traffic court on Dec. 24 for her citations, police said.
