8 Hurt In 7-Vehicle Crash On Dan Ryan

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Eight people were injured in a seven-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on the Dan Ryan Expressway in the South Side's Bridgeport neighborhood.

The five-vehicle, chain-reaction crash happened just after 2 p.m. in the northbound express lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) near West 30th Street, an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper said.

The crash happened where the express lanes meet the local lanes near the Chinatown feeder ramp, the trooper said.

Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said paramedics initiated an EMS Plan II response, which automatically sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was initiated about 2:30 p.m.

One child was taken in good condition to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, two people were hospitalized in critical condition, one at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and another at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Three people were taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and one person was taken in good condition to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center and Mercy Hospital, Curtis said.

The EMS Plan 1 was secured and all lanes were reopened about 3 p.m., authorities said.

State Police are investigating.
