Crane High School Pushes To Stop Teen Violence

Student At Near West Side School Was Shot To Death In March

CHICAGO (CBS) ― An effort to end violence is underway at a school where a student was tragically shot dead two months ago.

A quest for peace began Wednesday morning at Crane High School, at 2245 W. Jackson Blvd. on the city's Near West Side.

The school's motto will be "peace over violence." Students will be asked to make a pledge to value their own lives, respect all life, and inspire hope in others.

"Hopefully, that will bring some positive things with our children, as well as in the community," said Crane teacher Albertina Spratley.

On March 7, Crane student Ruben Ivy, 18, was shot dead one block away from the school shortly after class got out. The boy charged as an adult with shooting Ivy, DeVonte Smith, 15, was also a crane student.

Ivy is one of at least 24 Chicago Public Schools students who have been killed since the beginning of the year.
