1 Student Fatally Shot, 1 Beaten Near Crane H.S.

Police Say Seperate Incidents May Have Been Gang-Related

CHICAGO (CBS) ― One student was fatally shot, and another is hospitalized after being beaten in two unrelated incidents near Crane High School on the city's West Side.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports both incidents happened right around 3 p.m. as Crane High School, 2245 W. Jackson Blvd., was letting out.

Chicago police say Ruben Ivy, 18, was shot one block from Crane.

Shortly after class let out police confirm another student was beaten with a golf club on the school's steps, another shot and killed down the street.

"I just came down Western and I seen my friend running, crying saying 'my friend just got shot," said witness Iona Joyce.

Students say it happened when a fight that started inside Crane continued outside.

"A flock of people came out here, 60 of them, in a rush," said Crane student Quincy Rodgers.

"It happened so quick… I can't really tell you how it really happened because it was so messed up, so many people everywhere," said Crane student Douglas Young.

Students and police believe the incidents may be gang-related.

"We still are not sure if it's related to a disturbance in the school earlier this morning," said First Depurty Supt. James Jackson of the Chicago Police Department. "My understanding is the individuals involved in that were suspended and at this time we're still doing an investigation to ascertain if as expected it is part of that."

Police say they hope street blue light security cameras will help them make a quick arrest. They are already looking for a specific person of interest.

The beating victim is in good condition, police say.

Authorities also say there was a police presence around the school at the time that these incidents occurred.

"This is another example of guns being out there in the hands of individuals, especially and unfortunately in this case in the hands of juveniles," said First Deputy Supt. Jackson.

It has been a deadly week for Chicago's students. Four have been killed this week. Eighteen have been killed so far this school year, most of them shot.

"We got to get the criminals and guns off the streets," said Pastor Johnny Miller of Mt. Vernon Church.

Miller and other community activists say youth violence is a problem that isn't going away without change.

"We're gonna talk about funding, we're gonna talk about that, we're gonna talk about security, beefing it up, getting people in that can make a difference in these schools," said Johnny Harris of the Major Adams Community Committee.
