Craig Stebic Gets One Car Back, Not Guns
JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) ―
A Will County judge has ordered authorities to return the car seized last year during an investigation into the disappearance of a Plainfield woman.
But Will County Judge Richard Schoenstedt on Monday didn't tell authorities to return 24 guns or a pickup truck they took during a search of Craig Stebic's home last May.
CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports Craig Stebic walked out of the Will County Courthouse without saying a word after winning the right to have one of his two cars returned by police.
His Saturn could be back in Stebic's possession possibly as soon as Monday night. It was the car that his wife, Lisa Stebic, primarily drove before she disappeared without a trace nearly a year ago.
Prosecutors on Monday agreed to give back the Ion but argued against returning the Chevy pickup truck. That's the truck that a source told CBS 2 news partner the Naperville Sun where a small amount of Lisa Stebic's blood was recovered. The judge says he plans to rule on whether the truck and guns have to be returned later in the month.
While Craig Stebic was in a fourth floor courtroom watching his lawyer argue that Stebic should get his 24 guns and cars back, another Stebic lawyer was on the third floor in the same building at the same time arguing that Lisa Stebic's grandparents and parents shouldn't be allowed to have unfettered visitation with the couple's children.
"We will allow access with the children so long as Craig is involved," said attorney Dion Davi.
Asked why Stebic has to be involved, Davi said, "Well, he's the father for these children. He's the one who makes the decisions for these children."
Lisa Stebic's cousin Melanie Greenberg said, "No one in Lisa's family has seen the children for six months. Lisa's parents have not seen the children for two and a half years. We want to see the children."
No charges have been filed in last April's disappearance of Lisa Stebic. Police have identified Craig Stebic as a "person of interest" in the case.
