2 Family Members Indicted In Courtroom Melee

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man and a woman could each serve five year in prison after they were allegedly involved in a melee that broke out in a Cook County courtroom last month after a not guilty verdict was announced in a 2007 murder case.

Antwand Brown and Marsha Clay were indicted Friday on two counts each of aggravated battery to a police officer, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin. The charge is a Class 3 felony, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison if convicted.

Brown and Clay were allegedly involved in a fight on May 28 that broke out in Cook County Judge Nicholas Ford's courtroom, Room 307 of the Criminal Courthouse at 2600 S. California Ave., after the defendant in a murder case was acquitted, according to Cook County Sheriff's Dept. spokeswoman Penny Mateck.

Three other family members allegedly involved in the fight were charged with misdemeanors.

Antwand Brown was a brother and Clay the mother of Angelo Brown, who was killed in January 2007, just two weeks after his 30th birthday, Conklin said.

Cymara Samuels, 31, was acquitted May 28 by a jury of two counts of first-degree murder in Brown's death, Conklin said.

After the acquittal was announced, the victim's family began fighting with the defendant and the defendant's family, Mateck said. Deputies came into the courtroom to break up the melee, with Judge Ford even attempting to help.

Brown and Clay will be arraigned June 26, Conklin said.
