Conrad Black Sued For Shoving Cameraman

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Chicago television cameraman assigned to cover the trial of former Sun-Times publisher Conrad Black is suing the imprisoned ex-media mogul for shoving him in the lobby of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse last June.

Gary Babbitt, a cameraman for WGN News, was at the courthouse, at 219 S. Dearborn St., on June 4, 2007, assigned to record Black as part of the news station's coverage of the trial, according to a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Babbitt was "legally permitted" to be filming Black at the courthouse, but claims that "without provocation" Black "walked into and/or shoved" him in the shoulder or upper body in the lobby of the courthouse.

Black is being accused of one count of negligence and one count of battery for the incident, which was intentional according to the suit. Babbitt suffered a torn shoulder joint from the incident.

Babbitt wants more than $100,000 for his injuries.

Black was once one of the world's largest publishers of English-language newspapers, which included the Sun-Times, the Daily Telegraph in London, the Jerusalem Post and hundreds of community papers. He is currently serving a 6 ½ year prison sentence in Florida for fraud and obstruction of justice.
