Teen Girl Dies 2 Weeks After Cicero Shooting

CICERO, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Morton West High School student died early Thursday, more than two weeks after an Oct. 21 shooting that killed a man sitting alongside her in a car in west suburban Cicero.

Jya Acevedo, 17, of 3149 S. May St. in Chicago was in a Lincoln Town Car at 1611 S. 55th Ct. on Oct. 21 when she was shot in the face. She was on life support and in a coma following the shooting, and her family chose to disconnect life support Wednesday night, Cicero spokesman Elio Montenegro said.

Acevedo was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 1:05 a.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Horacio Mendoza, 18, of 1612 S. 55th Ct. in Cicero was also killed in the shooting. He was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Loretto Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.

Montenegro said the incident occurred at 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the 55th Court address. The two were sitting inside the vehicle when they were shot by an unknown gunman.

Acevedo was a "good student" at Morton West in Berwyn, Montenegro said. She was not involved in gangs or criminal activity, but may have been "hanging out with the wrong people," he said.

Montenegro could not confirm whether Mendoza was the intended target or whether he was involved in any suspicious acitivity, but said Cicero police are looking for a "person of interest" in the double murder, which remains under investigation.
