Church Event Proves Extra Exciting For Teens
ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A homeless man chose the wrong time to try to burglarize a northwest suburban church -- members of a teen group taking part in a New Year's event caught and held him until police arrived.
At about 2:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, Rolling Meadows police were called to the Harvest Bible Chapel at 800 Rohlwing Rd. to reports of a break-in, according to a police report.
A youth pastor told officers that during a "lock-in" event with a teen group, a man was caught attempting to take computers from an office area of the church. The group of teens who located the suspect detained him until police arrived, the report said.
Kevin M. Counter, 35, of Roselle, was arrested and placed in the back seat of a squad car, the report said. However, while officers investigated inside, he allegedly kicked out the rear-door window of the car and fled on foot.
Officers returned to find the squad car damaged and Counter just a few hundred yards away, still handcuffed, the report said. He was arrested again without incident.
Counter, charged with burglary and criminal damage to property, was ordered held on $35,000 bond. Hist next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 30 at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse.
