Mice, Garbage Shut Down Chinatown Food Store
Inspectors: Live Mouse Leapt From Bamboo Displays
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Food inspectors shut down a Chinatown food market Friday after finding live mice, more than 200 mouse droppings and garbage accumulation.
The city's Dumpster Task Force visited Mayflower Foods, 2104 S. Archer Ave. Friday to follow up on complaints of rodent activity in the area, according to a release from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.
Upon arrival, inspectors found close to 200 mouse droppings throughout the store, including the sales area and where food is stored, the release said.
"The highlight of the visit came when inspectors saw a live mouse spring from the bamboo leaves display and sprint past them," the release said.
A dead mouse was also found stuck to a glue board in the shop and garbage was strewn about under and around their dumpsters.
"While this establishment is known for its live seafood displays, our inspectors found first hand evidence of other living creatures that you don't want to ever find in a neighborhood grocer," Deputy Commissioner of Rodent Control Josie Cruz said in a statement.
Mayflower Foods was issued a critical citation for inadequate pest control and a serious citation for accumulation of garbage and material under and around their dumpster, the release said.
The shop was ordered to close and will be reinspected when management fixes the pest and garbage problems.
