Wisconsin Man Quarantined In Beijing For H1N1 Flu

Michael Berglund, Originally Of Aurora, Was Going To Meet Adoptive Daughter

BEIJING (CBS) ― A Wisconsin man who grew up in Aurora is in quarantine now in Beijing, after Chinese officials confirmed that another passenger on his flight was the country's first case of the H1N1 flu.

Beijing was supposed to be a stopping off point before Michael Berglund of Wausau, Wis., and his wife Carita met their daughter for the first time, an 18-month-old they were adopting in southern China.

But early Monday morning, hours before they were supposed to go to southern China, they were put into seven-day quarantine because the Chinese said a man on their Northwest Airlines flight from Tokyo had swine flu.

"When I looked out the peephole of our room at the hotel, there's four people standing out there in hazmat suits, waiting for us," Berglund said.

Berglund said they and other passengers were taken to an old guest house.

"They come around twice a day and take our temperature," he said.

They can't leave their guest house until Saturday. Berglund says they've been treated well, but he thinks it's all overkill and he's just trying to fill the time.

"I was playing hackey-sack with a 71-year-old Chinese lady today," he said.

At the very least, Berglund said, he and his wife will have a good story to tell their daughter some day.
