Two young children were critically injured Thursday after falling out of windows in two separate incidents on the Northwest Side just about two hours apart, authorities said.
The latest incident happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of West Shakespeare Avenue, according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor, who said a child was taken in critical condition to Children's Memorial Hospital after falling out of a window. Authorities said the child was a 2-year-old boy.
The boy was able to hang from the window sill for several minutes before he fell, witnesses said.
A neighbor says he yelled for the parents but they spoke only Spanish and apparently didn't understand.
"I said, 'Somebody had better get that baby before something bad happened,'" Sirquinn Selvy said. "And two seconds later, the screen falls out. And the baby's just like hanging on."
"He couldn't hold on no longer, and he fell," another witness, Kenneth Evans, said. "He hit the little grassy area."
The eaerlier incident happened in the Northwest Side's Irving Park neighborhood about 3 p.m.
A 4-year-old boy was critically injured after falling from a second story window of a residence at 4655 N. Kenton Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. An ambulance took the child to Children's Memorial Hospital in critical condition, a spokesman said.
Albany Park District police are investigating the first incident, according to police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor, who did not have immediately have information on the second incident Thursday evening.
