Boy, 6, Fatally Crushed by Garage Door on S. Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 6-year-old boy who was killed Saturday night after being crushed by a garage door in the South Side's Calumet Heights neighborhood has been identified.

Emergency crews responded to 9228 S. Saginaw Ave. at 7:19 p.m. on a report of a child "trapped in a garage door," according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva.

The 6-year-old was injured after the garage door closed on him and was initially taken to University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in "very critical" condition, Roccasalva said.

Dijion Sanders, 6, of the Saginaw Avenue address, was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. at Comer Children's Hospital, according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman.

Police said the overhead garage door fell on top of the boy's back.

Calumet Area Special Victims Unit detectives and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were notified of the boy's death, according to police News Affairs.

An autopsy for the boy is scheduled for later Sunday.
