Alleged Drunk Driver Kills Chicago Teen In Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (CBS) ―
A drunk driver was apparently to blame for a skating tragedy that killed a Chicago teenager in Des Moines, Iowa.
CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports that early Monday morning, 17-year-old Marcus Harrington was on skates on a Des Moines sidewalk when a car jumped the curb, hit him and left him for dead. He was in Iowa visiting his mother.
His mother, Dorothy Raggs, said, "How somebody could just hit him and keep going like he didn't do anything, that's just
"
Nineteen-year-old Colby Dunagan was later charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, a hit and run and driving under the influence, but the arrest was little comfort to Harrington's family in Chicago.
Harrington's grandmother Mary Lou Raggs said, "You have to handle it ... me and God, we'll handle it."
Harrington's grandmother said Marcus was a good young man, ready to start his senior year at Paul Robeson High School on the city's South Side. His cousin said she's angry his future was taken from him.
Brittany Beaton said, "It's hard, because it just happened. It was so sudden. One day he's here and one day he's not."
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, more than 17,600 people died in alcohol related traffic accidents in 2006, the last year for which statistics are available. That's an average of about one death every thirty minutes.
