Weis Wants SUVs To Replace Squad Cars

CHICAGO (AP) ― Chicago's new police superintendent believes it may be time to replace the ubiquitous Ford squad car with sport utility vehicles.

Jody Weis says he would like to update the department's "horrible" fleet of squad cars with SUV's. He told a Chicago Crime Commission luncheon on Wednesday that with Chicago's rugged winters, a sport-utility vehicle might make more sense than the traditional Crown Victoria.

Weis also wants better quality flashlights and radios and said he thought officers' guns should be more uniform.

Weis noted making any of these changes could be costly and difficult to pull off amid a city budget crunch. As it stands, officers have to buy their own service revolvers.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue says many of Weis' ideas are good ones. But the realities of funding may be an imposing barrier.
