City Gun Violence Continues Monday Night; 1 Dead

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago police have their hands full again Monday night, after gunfire erupted on the South Side. At least one person is dead.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports the shootings started in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant at 76th Street and Vincennes Avenue around 7:30 Monday night. As of 10 p.m., Chicago police were still on the scene gathering evidence.

According to police, three people were found shot at the scene. They were transported to an area hospital where one was pronounced dead on arrival. Another victim, a 23-year-old man, reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The third victim was shot in the chest.

A short time later another person was found shot at 76th and Eggleston near the scene of a car crash involving a sport-utility vehicle and a small car. Witnesses say the SUV struck a light pole and then was hit by a red tow truck that drove off.

Witnesses say a man then got out of the SUV and ran into a nearby business, where Chicago police later found him. He was transported to an area hospital. There is no word on his condition.

Chicago police have not yet said what they believe motivated the shootings, but they said they do believe the two shootings are related.

Monday night's shootings follow an especially violent weekend in Chicago. Chicago police say at least 36 people were shot between Friday and early Monday morning. At least seven of those people died.  Read more about the weekend's gun violence.
