Fire Breaks Out At 100-Year-Old West Side Church
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A fire broke out in a nearly 100-year-old church in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side Friday afternoon as workers were restoring the "beautiful" structure.
About 3 p.m., fire crews responded to Bethel Lutheran Church at 130 N. Keeler Ave., according to Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.
The church, built in 1910, was undergoing construction at the time of the blaze, but workers were able to escape without injury, Curtis said.
The fire broke out in the front of the three-story church, which also has tall steeples, Curtis said. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.
"It's a beautiful, old church," Curtis said, adding that he believes workers will be able to repair the fire damage and finish the renovations.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
