Two suspects, including a South Side teen, have been charged in Wednesday night's fatal drive-by shooting of a 9-year-old girl after the teen's mother allegedly implicated him because she feared for his safety.
Davionne Whitfield, 17, of 7429 S. Normal, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin.
Gerald Lauderdale, 19, also of the 7400 block of South Normal, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police News Affairs announced Friday evening.
Chastity Turner was killed and three men -- including her father -- were wounded in the incident which took place in the Hamilton Park neighborhood.
Someone inside a green van traveling south in the 7400 block of South Stewart Avenue fired multiple shots, striking Chastity as she washed the family dog about 7 p.m., police said.
Chastity's father, Andre Turner, 31, and two other men -- ages 17 to early 30s -- also were shot. All suffered non-life-threatening wounds, police said.
After the shooting, responding officers were canvassing the 7500 and 7600 block of South Parnell when someone told them the teen was involved and was hiding at a residence, according to the report. Officers went to the residence and found him.
In a telephone conversation, the arrestee's mother allegedly told police "the boys from Stewart'' were looking for her son because he was involved in the shooting of the little girl and when they find him they are going to kill him, according to the police report.
Whitfield was arrested about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 7500 block of South Parnell Avenue, the police report said.
Chastity, 9, of 6444 S. King Dr., was shot at 7438 S. Stewart Ave. and pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy Thursday determined she died of a gunshot wound to the back and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.
Both suspects are expected to appear in bond court Saturday.
