Chase: We're Not Lost In Chicago

Bank Says Reference To New York Streets In Ads Is On Purpose

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Chase Bank knows that the Empire State Building and Central Park aren't in Chicago.

Signs, such as those at downtown CTA stations, touting the bank's many local branches and ATM locations feature a field of Chase logos, with a branch or ATM location listed underneath each logo. The locations include Kinzie and State, Madison and Dearborn, Columbus Drive and Randolph , 47th and Madison, and Delancey and Essex.

Don't recognize the last two? That's because they're in New York City.

A Chase spokesman Wednesday said the bank knows those locations aren't in Chicago and their inclusion wasn't a mistake -- it's the bank's way of letting customers know they can go beyond Chicago and find branches and ATMs in 19 states.

Eagle-eyed Chicagoans may think it's yet another case of a corporation embarrassing itself -- such as a Bank of America ad in November that stated the bank's "local commitment" on a photo that was at least three years old, since the old Sun-Times building on Wabash was still standing. But it's not, Chase says.

"We know a lot of our customers travel," spokesman Tom Kelly said, "and when you travel you need cash." He stressed "the [locations] that are most prominent [in the ads] are the Chicago ones."

Chase has more than 9,100 ATMs throughout the United States, Kelly said, and this is one way of letting customers know they can use any of those ATMs, whether in Chicago, New York or anywhere else, free of charge.
