Study: Ceasefire Program Works, Areas Safer

CHICAGO (CBS) ― New research by Northwestern University shows the Ceasefire Anti-Violence Program works.

The three-year study focused on seven areas of Chicago where Ceasefire has operated.

According to the Sun-Times, the new data shows six of those areas are safer.

The Ceasefire Program was started in 1999. It treats violence as a public health epidemic, like AIDS.

August 2007, the governor cut more than $6 million of Ceasefire funding, but lawmakers are considering a bill to provide the program with more than $12 million in new funding.
