Teenage Girl Charged In Caustic Liquid Attack

Another Girl Was Charged Earlier This Month

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A 15-year-old girl has been charged in a caustic liquid attack that left a woman with severe facial burns last month in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The girl was charged as a juvenile with one count each of armed robbery and heinous battery and is being held at a juvenile detention facility, Chicago Police said.

She is the second teenage girl charged in the attack that left Esperanza Medina, 48, critically injured on July 28. Medina was preparing to get into her car in the 2900 block of West Altgeld Street when the two girls walked up and poured the liquid on her, police said.

The substance washed over Medina's eyes and upper body, and the substance remained on the exterior of her car and on the driver's seat.

Neighbors said Medina screamed loudly, took off her clothes, and ran back to her apartment where her family called police. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Two females and a male were caught on videotape by surveillance cameras at a nearby apartment complex, at Altgeld and Sacramento. The cameras were just installed at the building four days before the crime.
The 15-year-old girl was arrested on Wednesday with the help of police in west suburban Cicero. Earlier this month, detectives also arrested a 16-year-old girl who had been caught using videotape evidence and information from Cicero police and concerned citizens.

The first teen was charged on Aug. 17 and arrested by San Joaquin County, Calif., Sheriff's officers in Stockton, Calif., where she lived, police said.
