Four Charged In Catalytic Converter Thefts

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Four people were arrested and charged this week with stealing catalytic converters from vehicles on the Northwest Side.

Last month, five people who were part of an "organized crew" were also charged in a scheme that involved stealing the auto parts from vehicles throughout the city.

Joseph Hillery, 46, of the 1300 block of West Roosevelt Road; Tyrone Patterson, 39, of the 7400 block of North Seeley Ave.; Desmond Feltus, 42, of the 200 block of South 11th Avenue in Maywood and Natashia Freeman, in her 30s, from the 2100 block of North LaPorte Ave. were each charged with felony theft, according to a release from police News Affairs.

Bond was set at $50,000 for Feltus; $30,000 for Freeman; $90,000 for Hilary and $200,000 for Patterson during a Friday hearing, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office. All four men will appear for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 12 in North Felony Court (Br. 42).

Following an increase in reports of stolen catalytic converters in the area, Harrison Area detectives began an investigation, the release said. On Nov. 5, detectives set up surveillance cameras and monitored POD cameras in the 5000 block of West Bernice Avenue to identify anyone who may be involved with the thefts. Video revealed a vehicle driven by Freeman parking next to a victim's vehicle while Patterson crawled underneath the vehicle and stole the converter, the release said.

Feltus and Hillery acted as lookouts while the theft took place, the release said.

The suspects drove off, but were taken into custody by police a short time later.
