Car Plows Into Crowd, Injures 5
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
Two men and three women were injured when a motorist who was maced drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians Sunday night in a West Side alley.
The accident, which police are classifying as a hit-and-run, happened in an alley in the 600 block of North Monticello Avenue about 10:20 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks.
A car struck a number of people and left the scene, according to Banks.
Fire crews called an EMS Plan 1 to an accident at 635 N. Lawndale Ave., about 10:15 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight, who said only four people were transported to hospitals and the Plan 1 response was secured by 10:50 p.m.
Two people were taken to John Stroger Hospital, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition, one person was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition and one person was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital in fair condition, Knight said.
The incident, which injured five adults, occurred during a barbeque or gathering in a neighbor's backyard, near the alley at 638 N. Monticello Ave., according to police.
The incident was sparked when someone in the crowd sprayed mace at the motorist, who then drove through the crowd, possibly twice and struck three women and two men.
The five were taken to Mount Sinai, John H. Stroger Jr. of Cook
County and Norwegian-American Hospital. One of the men was in critical condition at Stroger, according to police, who said the motorist remained at large early Monday.
