Fire Lieutenant Confronts, Shoots Car Burglar

Burglar Was Known In Neighborhood, Authorities Say

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Chicago Fire Department lieutenant who saw his car being broken into in front of his Gresham neighborhood home Monday morning confronted the burglar and shot at him, police said.

The incident happened about 5:50 a.m. in the 8200 block of Wentworth Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. A male offender was breaking into a car in front of a home when a resident of the home saw him and confronted him.

The two fought and the owner of the car fired a shot at the offender, who was known in the area, Perez said.

A police source confirmed the alleged shooter and homeowner was a Fire Department lieutenant. It was unclear Monday afternoon whether he has been charged in the incident. A Fire Department spokesman could not immediately confirm the man was employed by the department.

Police are also working to determine whether the alleged offender is the same 18-year-old man who walked into the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the back just after 6 a.m. Monday. He initially told police he was shot at 81st and Escanaba.

The man was transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County for his injuries, Perez said.
