Car Crashes Into North Suburban Restaurant

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Lake County News-Sun) ― Jorge Arroyo was never happier about his disdain for window seats than he was Friday afternoon.

Just minutes after he asked to be moved away from a window seat at Sunset House restaurant, 1451 Golf Road, a car crashed into the building, sending glass and debris raining down the on spot where he had been sitting.

"I probably would have been the one to get hit," Arroyo, 25, of Waukegan said, after the accident. "I was really fortunate and happy that it didn't cut me in half."

Arroyo said he often asks to be moved away from windows because he doesn't like bright sunlight or windows while eating.

A 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage driven by 82-year-old Bruce Bolling of Waukegan crashed into the north side of the building around 1:30 p.m.

Bolling was backing out of a parking spot when his foot slipped off the brake and he punched the accelerator, said Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Art Yancey. Bolling was not cited in the crash. He was taken to Vista Medical Center East for treatment of minor injures.

An unidentified woman was sitting at the other booth near the window. She suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Vista East, said a Fire Department supervisor.

The impact of the crash pushed in a short brick wall and smashed two large windows.

The accident seemed to happen quickly, said Rick Peters of Waukegan, who was in the Sunset House parking lot at the time.

"The car backed up and there was this loud boom," Peters said.
