A driver was killed early Wednesday when a sport-utility vehicle slammed into a railroad viaduct on the city's Southwest Side.
The SUV struck the viaduct on California Avenue just south of 31st Street around 3:30 a.m., police said.
The vehicle was demolished after hitting a bridge support and ending up on the sidewalk.
The man driving, believed to be in his 30s, was killed in the crash, police said. He was the only one in the vehicle and no one else was injured, police said.
California Avenue was closed near the scene, forcing motorists headed to the nearby Cook County Jail and Criminal Courts Building to find alternate routes.
