A west suburban man was ordered held on $10 million bond Friday after allegedly burning himself and his two sons -- one fatally -- last November.
DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin set the $10 million bond for Kaushik Patel, 34, of Glendale Heights, who appeared for the hearing via teleconference, according to DuPage County State's Attorney's office spokesman Paul Darrah.
Patel is scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. Tuesday when prosecutors plan to make a motion to have his bond revoked.
Prosecutors tried to have Patel's bond revoked Friday but were denied because Patel was not physically present in court, Darrah said.
Patel is accused of setting fire to his two sons, -- Om, 4, and Vishv, 7, -- in their home on Nov. 18, 2007. Patel and his sons all suffered severe burns and were airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where Om died on Jan. 17.
Patel has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated arson and one count of attempted first-degree murder, charges which could send him to prison for life if he is convicted.
Prosecutors believe Patel doused his sons with gasoline in the bathtub of the home on Harvest Lane, set them on fire, then drove the critically injured boys to his brother's home about five miles away in Hanover Park. Family members then contacted emergency services.
Vishv remains in critical condition in a drug-induced coma, according to a hospital spokesman.
Patel's wife, Nisha Patel, was not home at the time of the incident, but has been granted an order of protection keeping him away from Vishv.
