Charges Filed Against Man Whose Sons Were Burned

Kaushik Patel Charged With Murder, Attempted Murder, Aggravated Arson

WHEATON, Ill. (CBS) ― A Glendale Heights man is now charged with murder and other offenses after allegedly setting his two young sons on fire.

Kaushik Patel, 34, may be released from the hospital Friday, according to DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett. Earlier reports indicated he could be released as early as Thursday.

Birkett said if Patel is released on Friday, he could appear for a bond hearing that day. Patel is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and attempted first-degree murder.

Authorities say Patel set his sons on fire Nov. 18 in the family home. The damage was contained to a bathroom, and police said instead of calling 911, Patel drove the boys to his brother's Hanover Park home, and his brother called police.

Patel was also burned in the fire himself.

Om Patel, 4, died from his injuries on Jan. 17. Vishv Patel, 7, remains hospitalized.
