Police Standoff Ends; Man Fatally Shoots Himself

BURBANK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 23-year-old southwest suburban man is dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound that ended nine hours of being barricaded inside his home.

Adolfo Corral of the 8000 block of South Mansfield Avenue in Burbank was found in an upstairs bathroom after police heard a single gunshot about 7:10 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death but had no further details.

Burbank police were called to a home in the 8000 block of Mansfield Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of an armed subject threatening to kill himself, according to a release from police.

Responding officers determined the subject was armed with a handgun and that a second subject, later identified as a cousin, was inside the residence. Officers set up a perimeter and began evacuating neighboring residents, the release said.

Police said the cousin stayed in the home of his own accord in an attempt to keep the armed subject calm and to prevent him from harming himself.

About 7:11 a.m. Monday, a shot was heard from inside the residence and one person exited the front door. Suburban Emergency Response Team members entered and the armed subject was located in an upstairs bathroom with a single gunshot wound to his head, according to a morning release from police.

The subject was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Hostage negotiations began about 1:05 a.m. and continued until 7:10 a.m., the release said.

Liberty Junior High at 5900 W. 81st St. was closed for the day, though the school gymnasium was used to shelter evacuated residents.

Seventh-graders were scheduled to come to school for an hour Monday, their last day of school. Students will be able to come to the school on another day during the summer break to collect belongings. Report cards will likely be mailed to students' homes.
