Chicago Police have issued a community alert for the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, after a man armed with a knife sexually assaulted a woman early Wednesday as she left a CTA 'L' station and was headed home. The offender in that assault matches the description of a man suspected in two previous sexual assaults in the neighborhood.
Three women were raped in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, and police believe they may be linked. The first assault was on Sept. 26, 2008. There were two attacks this month on Feb. 5 and another Wednesday morning.
CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports that police say about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, a lone woman was walking away from the Blue Line 'L' Station located at Western, Milwaukee and Armitage avenues and was walking home alone. She was coming home from a friend's place when a man with a knife ordered her to a secluded place on the 2100 block of North Maplewood Avenue where he raped her.
This man may have also been involved in a sexual assault that occurred on the 2300 block of West Moffat Street on February 5 and a sexual assault that occurred on the 1700 block of North Marshfield Avenue on September 26, 2008, police said.
Police have a dark, grainy picture of the man who attacked the woman on Feb. 5 thanks to a surveillance camera in the area.
CTA employees were posting a community alert about the most recent case.
"I didn't know about this morning," said neighborhood resident Justine Dombrowski. "I'm just making sure not to transport on my own all the time, especially really, really early in the morning and late at night."
"I really wish they would catch this person who is doing it," said neighborhood resident Sandra Hansen. "There's a lot of young women in this neighborhood."
The offender in all three incidents is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, 180 to 200 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, a medium to dark complexion and a goatee. The man was armed with a knife, as well, police said. In the most recent incident the offender was wearing an oversized dark jacket of an unknown color.
This morning's victim was wearing a hoodie that obscured her vision, and they say, she was listening to music on an iPod, which means that she wasn't completely aware of her surroundings.
Police urge women to be aware of their surroundings at all times, especially when walking alone.
