Fire Destroys Dollar Store In Broadview

No Injuries Reported

BROADVIEW, Ill. (CBS) ― A raging broke out at a strip mall in west suburban Broadview overnight, causing no injuries but destroying the building.

The fire started about 8:15 p.m. at the commercial building at Dollar Store, 1601 W. Roosevelt Rd., according to the Broadview Fire Department. Dispatch reports indicate the blaze was elevated to a second-alarm.

The blaze spread to neighboring stores, but was contained to a single building, fire officials said. Dispatch reports indicate the stores were a hair salon and another dollar store.

Firefighters struggled to battle the blaze.

"Being a truss roof, we didn't have anybody inside; couldn't put anybody outside," Broadview Fire Chief John Tierney said at the scene while the fire was raging. "Right now, we've got it contained in two of the three buildings right now in this shopping center."

The son of the owner of the Dollar Store said his father left just before the fire started.

"My dad just closed the shop, and he was on his way home when he got a call after 10 minutes from the alarm company telling him to come back," said Malek Zoubi. "He thought it was like, just a burglary alarm or a false alarm. He just came back to see what happened, and he saw all the fire."

The fire was controlled about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, but the building was "totaled," according to a firefighter. Nobody was injured.

Police closed all roads within a half-block of the fire so emergency crews could gain easy access to the blaze, according to a Broadview police dispatcher.

By 5:15 a.m., Roosevelt Road was back open, but 16th Avenue remained blocked off.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation early Wednesday.
