Police Talking To Father Of Burned Boys

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Police on Wednesday were talking to the father of two young boys who were doused with gasoline and set on fire in their west suburban home on Sunday night.

Kaushik Patel, 34, and his sons, ages 4 and 7, were severely burned in a fire in their home at 1860 Harvest Lane in Glendale Heights, according to a release from police. Evidence shows the children were burned in a bathroom shower stall, according to Glendale Heights police Cmdr. Dennis Schar.

After the fire, Patel drove the boys to his brother's home at 1830 Whitney Dr. in Hanover Park. About 9:15 p.m., Hanover Park police and fire departments responded to the home and learned the fire had happened in Glendale Heights.

Patel was taken to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, and the boys to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, the release said. The family has since been airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The condition of the boys was not available Wednesday afternoon, but Schar said police were "having conversations" with their father.

Schar said Kaushik Patel is considered a suspect in the case, but the DuPage County State's Attorney's office has yet to file charges.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the incident, but has had no prior contact with the family, spokesman Jimmie Whitelow said. The two boys were the only two children in the home, he said.

The fire is being investigated as an arson, police said. The children's mother was not home at the time of the fire.

The fire is being probed by the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Fore, Glendale Heights police and DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
