Boy Accidentally Strangles Self In Venetian Blinds
Maxillian Padilla, 3, Of Oak Forest, Discovered Hanging From Bedroom Window
OAK FOREST, Ill. (STNG) ―
A 3-year-old boy apparently strangled himself accidentally when he became caught in a cord attached to window blinds at his southwest suburban home Tuesday evening, authorities said.
Maxillian Padilla of 16367 Terry Lane in Oak Forest was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. Tuesday at South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for later Wednesday.
Maxillian was discovered by his mother hanging from his bedroom window about 5:15 p.m. at their home in the 16300 block of Terry Lane in the Fieldcrest subdivision, Oak Forest Police Chief Dennis Olszewski said.
Only Maxillian and his parents home at the time, Olszewski said. Authorities are investigating the death as accidental.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is not currently investigating the death, spokesman Jimmie Whitelow said Wednesday.
Accidental strangulations from window-blind cords are prevalent among young children. State Farm Insurance reported that 359 children were strangled by such cords in the United States from 1981-95. Nearly half of such strangulations go unreported and about 93 percent involve children 3 and younger, according to State Farm.
