NW Indiana Man Found Dead In Roadside Ditch

SCHERERVILLE,Ind. (STNG) ― The cause of death remains uncertain Wednesday for a 46-year-old man whose body was found in ditch in northwest Indiana on Tuesday.
Police got a call around 12:30 p.m. after a Reichelt Plumbing employee spotted a body in the Central Avenue ditch along Kennedy Avenue and Winston Court in Schererville.

The Lake County Coroner's office was called to the scene at 12:37 p.m. The body was decomposed but officials were unsure of how long it had been there and could not tell whether foul play was involved in the death.

The body was identified Wednesday as that of Anthony Packauskas, 46, of Highland, Ind., according to a spokeswoman for the coroner's office.

But she said the results of a Wednesday autopsy were incomplete pending further testing. She said the body had no visible signs of trauma.

The Schererville Fire Department helped remove the man from the ditch and the Lake County Sheriff' Crime Lab assisted at the scene.

Kelly Widing, who owns Kelly's Transmissions in the office park, said some of the businesses occasionally have items stolen, but otherwise the area is pretty quiet.

"After about 7 or 8 p.m., there's nobody around," Widing said. "In the summer, I would occasionally ride by on my motorcycle to check on things."

Widing said another employee walks his dog in the lot and he's surprised he didn't discover the body sooner.

Anyone with information should call Schererville police at (219) 322-5000.
