BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (STNG) ― An elderly man was killed in a house fire early Friday in south suburban Blue Island.

At 7:30 a.m., firefighters were battling a blaze at a house at 2701 York St., according to a Blue Island Fire Department firefighter.

A 72-year-old man was killed in the blaze, according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman, who said the man's identity was pending family notification. The man was pronounced dead at Metro-South Hospital in Blue Island at 7:05 a.m., the spokesman said.

Unconfirmed dispatch reports indicate the fire started about 7 a.m. and one person was removed from the 2 ½ story house. The firefighter did not immediately have any information on injuries.

Blue Island police could not be reached for comment.
