It's a frightful economy, but stores are hoping for a good Black Friday, the official start of the holiday shopping season. And, as CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, stores are working hard for your business.
Plenty of retailers are getting a jump start on Black Friday, keeping stores open with sales going on Thanksgiving Day.
The National Retail Federation president says this could be the most heavily promotional Black Friday in history. The Thursday newspapers were jammed with ads, some with coupons, and other touting early morning door buster sales.
But Steve Bernas of the Better Business Bureau says if you really want to save, it's your responsibility to know what things cost and where the markdowns are.
When he says you need to do your homework he means going through that big bulky insert from your paper. Figure out what you want to buy and stick to it.
"The most important thing is to set a budget ahead of time," Bernas said. "We see consumers get in trouble with impulse buys."
He also says be careful of door busters. Just because a few things are on sale doesn't mean everything in the store is.
If you're wondering how busy it's going to be, the National Retail Federation estimates 128 million people will shop on Black Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It's projecting about a 2 percent rise in holiday sales this year over last.
