Elaborate Pot-Growing Operation Found In Berwyn

BERWYN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Nearly $290,000 worth of marijuana, seven kilos of cocaine, 300 grams of heroin, guns and ecstasy pills were seized Tuesday from a west suburban home that police say contained an elaborate indoor garden for growing plants.

A joint investigation by the Cook County Sheriff's police and Berwyn police led to a home on the 2200 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in Berwyn, according to a release from the sheriff's office. Officers had developed information that illegal narcotics were being manufactured and sold there.

While executing a search warrant, officers found 355 cannabis plants at different stages of maturity in three rooms set up with lighting and ventilation to cultivate the plants, according to the release.

"From the outside, this house appears to be just another family residence on this quiet suburban street," Sheriff Tom Dart said in the release. "Once inside, the plants, drugs and guns show an entirely different existence."

The plants, when harvested and sold, would have an estimated street value of nearly $290,000, according to the release. In addition, 10 guns, seven kilos of cocaine, 300 grams of heroin, and ecstasy pills were seized.

Charges are pending against two individuals.

Dart commended the Sheriff's Police Narcotics Task Force, made up of officers from the sheriff's office and Calumet City, Lyons and South Chicago Heights police departments, for their work on this case.
