Bell's Beer Returns To Chicago Taps

Dispute With Distributor Had Made It Unavailable In Chicago For 2 Years

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Ring the bells and sound the alarm - a beloved microbrew is back in town.

Sheffield's bar at midnight Thursday night became the first Chicago bar in nearly two years to tap a keg of Bell's beer, said Phil Kuhl, self-proclaimed "beer dude" at the North Side pub.

"Now people don't have to drive to Wisconsin and Indiana to get it," Kuhl said, who was expecting a crowd to celebrate the beer's "triumphant return."

Bell's Brewery, Inc., based near Kalamazoo, Mich., was a Midwest microbrew favorite when a 2006 dispute with its distributor caused its taps locally to run dry. Larry Bell, owner of the microbrew, said deals with three new distributors has the ice-cold brew flowing again in Chicago.

"I couldn't be more thrilled having Bell's back in Chicago," Bell said.

Also celebrating is Lexi Delandry, manager of Roscoe Village's Village Tap, who has spent the last two years trying to explain to thirsty customers why she wasn't pouring their favorite drink.

"It's good," Delandry said. "They distribute really great beer and we're glad to have them back."
