Chase, Shootout And Crash Follow Bank Robbery

SAUK VILLAGE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― It had all the makings of a great movie plot: Bomb threat, armed bank robbery, shootout and high-speed-chase that ends with the getaway car crashing into a police car.

But it was all too real and when it was over two people, including a police officer, were injured, and two men were in police custody after a crash on the Bishop Ford Freeway in south suburban Sauk Village.

The wild series of events started sometime after 10 a.m. Thursday when a call was received at the First National Bank of South Holland at 200 W. 162nd St. reporting a bomb threat, according to FBI spokesman Ross Rice.

Shortly afterward, about 10:30 a.m., an armed robber entered the bank with a hand gun, disarmed a security guard and held bank employees hostage for several minutes, Rice said in an e-mail. The suspect then fled to a waiting van with an undetermined amount of cash in a bag he'd brought with him.

South Holland and surrounding suburban police departments gave chase and spotted the vehicle near Vincennes Avenue and 159th Street. The chase ended in a four-car crash at Route 394 and Sauk Trail in Sauk Village.

The crash involved squad cars from South Holland and Sauk Village, the robbery suspect's car and a recreational vehicle, according to state police.

"Two suspects were arrested following a high-speed chase that ended when a Sauk Village patrol car was rammed by the suspect's vehicle," Rice said.

Several shots were fired during the chase by both pursuing police officers and the robbers, he said. One police officer and one of the suspects were injured, but not seriously.

The intersection remained closed to traffic early Thursday afternoon.

A search of the bank and the surrounding area was conducted for any explosive devices, but none was found. Federal bank robbery charges are expected to be filed Friday against the suspects, Rice said.
