A 2-week-old baby girl, who was found in a pile of garbage Tuesday morning in west suburban Franklin Park, is going to be OK, thanks to a stranger.
Police said they received a call about 8:30 a.m. that the baby, described as a Hispanic girl, had been found by someone looking for salvageable items on the 3000 block of Lee Street.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports that the baby was found outside a dumpster surrounded by debris because Tuesday is garbage pickup day. Someone heard the baby cry before the garbage trucks showed up.
She was left in a cream-and-green car-seat carrier, and was wearing a white hat, an orange one-piece coverall, a green jacket, pink pants and white booties. She was covered in a light blue blanket and a blue adult sweatshirt.
Whoever abandoned the baby girl dressed her in layers and left her outside a Franklin Park home - added to a pile of wet carpet, furniture and other things homeowners were throwing out after the recent floods. Police say a man looking for recyclables heard the baby cry and homeowners called police.
Doctors say the infant is Hispanic; she did not appear to be abused and was in good health.
"I don't think there was any intent to physically harm the baby because of the nature of the way the baby was dressed and everything else," said Chief Tom Wolfe, Franklin Park Police. "But then again I have to question the reasoning of the person to put the baby all ready to be picked up by somebody, but leave it in a pile of refuse rather than putting it out in the open where somebody would see it.
"We're pretty certain that this baby came from the area and is only 2 weeks old, so somebody may have known of somebody who just recently gave birth who all of a sudden now doesn't have the baby, or may have seen the baby in these clothes."
Authorities are hoping that someone will recognize the photos and that relatives will claim the baby. If not, that child will be sent to a foster home.
The parents, if found, could face charges of abandonment because they did not take the baby to a safe place like a fire station, a police station or a hospital.
Police are asking for the public's help in finding the baby's parents and asked anyone with information to call (847) 671-8270.
