Baby Girl Born In Car On The Way To Hospital

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Bibs, bottles and bassinets are all traditional items to have when a baby is born. But for one Chicago couple, the actual birth was extremely non-traditional.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports that at just one day old, Eveline Garcia Vargas, at 19 inches and five pounds, 11 ounces, has already created a lot of excitement by the way she made her entrance into the world.

Her mother, Margarita Vargas said through a translator, "I never thought it would happen so fast."

At around 3 p.m., Margarita started having contractions. By 7 p.m., they were intense. She got into the car with her husband and brother-in-law and headed north down Clark Street to head to the hospital to deliver the baby. But little Eveline had other plans.

Margarita's husband delivered their daughter inside the back seat of the family car. Her brother-in-law was able to flag down a fire chief who was on his way to this nearby station.

Fire Chief James O'Donnell called an ambulance. Mother and newborn were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Margarita says she's seen situations like this happen in soap operas and movies, but she never thought something like this would happen to her.

"I'm looking forward to going home with her," Vargas said.

Margarita will be heading home with Eveline in two days. She'll be joining her older brother and sister. Margarita says she's looking forward to life as she once knew it, and says she wants to rest - as much as she can with a newborn in the house.
