The West Side's Austin neighborhood became an even more dangerous place to live this weekend, when nine people were wounded in a series of shootings over the course of just one night.
A 9-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy were among the victims.
The first shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, five people were found wounded in an area near 104 S. Lotus Ave. Five males, ranging in age from 17 to 29, were found wounded near the Lotus Avenue address, but the victims were spread out in the area, authorities said.
Three people were taken to Loretto Hospital, one in good condition and two in fair, Curtis said. One person, reportedly the 17-year-old, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Another person in fair condition was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.
Police said the incident was a drive-by, and that all of the victims were found shot on the street.
About 50 minutes later, another shooting about one mile from the Lotus Avenue address left a 9-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy wounded.
The girl and teen were in a front yard at 1052 N. LeClaire Ave. when they were shot, possibly by a passing vehicle, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.
Both were taken to Mount Sinai hospital in serious condition, Curtis said.
Police said both victims were shot in the leg, and that their injuries were not life threatening.
There was no indication that those shootings were related, police said.
At about 9:20 p.m., a 14-year-old male was shot in the leg in the 5400 block of West Kinzie Street, but it was not known how badly he was injured or where he was hospitalized, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.
The teen was playing basketball when he heard gunshots and someone noticed the victim's left foot was bleeding, at which time he realized he had been shot, Gaines said.
In another shooting at 10:52 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was seriously hurt when he was shot in the shoulder in the 5800 block of West Midway Park, according to Gaines. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, according to Gaines.
The teen was walking home from a girlfriend's house when a male black gunman opened fire from a white car. The shooter fled the scene southbound, Gaines said.
Grand Central Area Chicago Police detectives are investigating all the shootings and no one was in custody for any of them, according to Gaines.
