City Of Aurora Lays Off More Staff
AURORA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
The City of Aurora handed layoff notices to eight more employees Friday, the second such round of layoffs since September.
All eight employees were executives or non-exempt, and not covered by any of the city's unions. Five of the eight were part-time employees. The move is expected to save the city $400,000.
City officials have not released names or departments of those employees who were laid off.
The layoffs are a precursor to the unveiling of the 2010 budget next Tuesday. With declining revenues leading to a projected $19 million deficit by the end of next year, the city has been cutting costs wherever it can.
In September, layoff notices were handed to 63 employees, and after a round of impact bargaining with the two unions affected, the city ended up terminating 36 of those employees. That move followed a voluntary buyout plan, which saw 36 other employees taking incentives to quit their jobs.
The city is still in concession talks with four of its six major employee bargaining units. Both the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1514 and the Aurora Fire Officers Association have agreed to forego wage increases in 2010, with AFSCME employees taking 10 unpaid furlough days. Executive and non-exempt employees, including Mayor Tom Weisner, will see their wages frozen in 2010 as well.
The budget, which the city's Finance Committee is expected to begin reviewing on Tuesday, assumes further concessions from AFSCME Local 3298, as well as police, fire, and police management unions, according to Assistant Chief of Staff Carie Anne Ergo.
