Suburban Attorney Convicted Of Drunk Driving

WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A west suburban attorney faces up to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of causing a drunken-driving accident which left a woman seriously injured.

A DuPage County jury deliberated for about two hours Wednesday before finding Timothy Winfield, 43, of 5154 Atwater Ct. in Lisle guilty of two counts of aggravated DUI involving great bodily harm, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office

At about midnight on Nov. 19, 2005, Winfield was driving on Butterfield Road in Wheaton when he ran a red light and his car crashed into a van driven by an 18-year-old woman, according to a release from the state's attorney's office.

The crash pushed the van about 100 feet off the road and caused serious injury to the woman. An investigation led by Wheaton police led to the filing of charges against Winfield on Jan. 21, 2006.

The victim has fully recovered from her injuries, the release said.

Winfield's next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 9 for post-trial motions and to begin the sentencing phase of the case, the release said. He faces up to 12 years in prison on the felony conviction.

"As an officer of the court, Mr. Winfield should have known better than to drink and drive," DuPage Couny State's Atty. Joe Birkett said in a statement. "His actions severely injured one young woman and put countless other motorists at risk."
